Marcus and Company

Samantha

After driving for over an hour, we arrive at a small cottage as the sun is setting. Adam instructs us to remain in the SUV while he walks toward the home. The house is white-washed with brown-trimmed shutters, in need of some repair. A goat and several chickens roaming the large fenced yard move away as Adam approaches. Funny; they never stop munching grass and pecking at bugs, but some instinct must tell them to give space to the predator entering their territory.

Adam enters the yard through a small gate that he could easily have stepped over and walks toward the front door. A middle-aged man comes out of the home, wearing tan coveralls and a cautious look.

Rose and I watch as Adam speaks to the farmer. The man’s face goes slack, and he nods his head several times before turning to walk back into the cottage. I spot a woman’s round face peeking out from a window before disappearing behind a curtain. Adam motions for us to join him, prompting us to trade the warmth inside the SUV for the cold night air.

“So, vampires can compel people with a suggestion. I’ve always wondered about that myth. That is what he just did, correct?” Rose asks, giving me an inquiring glance. I have a fleeting moment of seeing her young, adventurous, and happy. It makes my heart ache.

“I’m sure that’s what he did. Adam doesn’t have great people skills. He’s a more brute-force sort of guy who happens to clean up nicely.” I laugh.

We’ve just reached Adam when another vehicle pulls up next to ours. The black sports car is slick and shiny with dark tinted windows that don’t allow you to see the occupants. I glance up to see Adam watching the car intently.

“Is this Marcus? Or should we be nervous?” I ask.

“Marcus and company,” Adam says without emotion. I’m not certain if he’s happy about the “company” or not. As the doors open, a sharply dressed black man glides out of the driver’s seat, and at the same time a long-legged-blonde slides out of the passenger side. I’d know they’re vampires by the unnatural way they move. It’s like watching a panther stalking its prey—slow and seductive. Each step is smooth yet unnatural.

Adam’s eyes never leave the woman, which causes me to wonder if he knows her. I recognize Marcus from a dream I had months ago. In the dream, he was there with Adam and Jacob when a mission to capture a dominant vampire-witch ended with the death of the woman’s two sisters, more than three-hundred years ago.

They didn’t know it at the time, but that night had long-lasting consequences. Consequences that almost cost me my life at the hands of a witch with a long memory.

I’ve often wondered about Marcus, having seen him in my dream, but never having met him. He certainly looks like a sophisticated version of a male model, but the woman is drop-dead-gorgeous—maybe literally, seeing that she’s a vampire.
